In his home state of New Hampshire, Murphy made political history with his election to the N.H. House of Representatives as the first member of his party from his district since pre-Civil War days, a district dominated 9-1 in voter registration by the incumbent party. The youngest  legislator at the time, He went on to win a total of nine elections and was nominated for Lt. Governor as well.

Murphy, also, served as a city councilor, planning board member, and as a member of the  county delegation. As a prolific member of the Constitutional Convention in New Hampshire he sponsored more successful amendments to the state constitution than any delegate in New Hampshire history including measures to equalize the rights of women. 

He co-authored one of the first consumer protection laws in the nation and he guaranteed   absentee voting rights to all citizens via sponsorship and promotion of a Constitutional Amendment passed by the voters of the Granite State. 

As a social services administrator, the University of New Hampshire graduate, created many innovative programs and projects for low-income children and youth. Murphy has always contended that organizing and running a pre-school Head Start program for disadvantaged 3-5 year olds was the most rewarding job he has ever held. 

Murphy has been member of the National Association of Television Program Executives and has been included in The Dictionary Of International Biography and Who's Who In American Politics.  He appeared in the Emmy-award winning Paramount motion picture,  The Defection Of Simas Kudirka alongside famed 3 time Oscar-nominated actor Alan Arkin, recently seen in Little Miss Sunshine.

Murphy's Luck is the working title of a book he is writing about his life - overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds and achieving success: political and personal.
